Qualitative filter paper is recommended for general use where particulates must be removed irrespective of the identity or amount.

Standard qualitative filter papers are used for gravity filtration due to the high level of alpha cellulose content. This means that the paper will weaken when wet. This makes this grade of filter paper unsuitable for any form of vacuum filtration.
